Why thank you, Orquiadicto, and thank you for such a lovely invitation

Are you a member of the Irish Orchid Society by any chance?
Well Hello There Natalie,
It is great to meet someone else in Ireland who loves orchids. I am not a member of the Irish Orchid Society as I am too far away to attend talks in Dublin. Are you a member? Where are you? I am in Wexford

I'm in south county Dublin, very close to Bray. I was thinking about joining the orchid society, but even though I'm closer to Dublin it's still difficult to get across town to get to the botanical gardens - especially on a Monday evening! I'm still aiming to get to maybe one or two just to see what they're like.

It is very nice to know there are other orchid fanatics in Ireland! We have so few resources here, but I have recently discovered online ordering.

Natalie,

We will have to meet up at some stage!
I always go to the spring Orchid Fair at the Botanic Gardens. Burnham Nurseries and Stead Nurseries, from UK, have plants for sale there and you can order beforehand from Burnham. But it ends up quite an expensive little day out.
This year I discovered Schwerter Orchid Nursery in Germany and their wonderful on-line catalogue. There will be no looking back (but the Orchid Show is worth attending too).
What types of orchids do you like/have?

That would be brilliant!

I was at the orchid fair for the first time this year. I didn't realise you could pre-order, but I'll definitely be doing that next year! I ended up with three new plants - two young plants and a milt spectabilis var moreliana which I thought was a young plant but has just bloomed.

Like most people in Ireland I've had the garden centre variety hybrid phals for about six years or so. Any time I saw something new which I really liked I'd snap that up too - all hybrids of course and all from garden centres or Woodies. With the discovery of online ordering recently I've branched out to species orchids. My preference is for Dens and Milts. I wanted to try some cold growing orchids so I could grow them outside so I've got some Masdies now as well. But I'm trying my hand with other genera too.

Do you prefer the hybrid Catts or species? I don't know how you can call yourself an amateur with 58 orchids!

If we don't meet before then, we will have to meet at next year's Orchid Fair, Natalie!
I got Cattleya forbesii (pre-ordered) and impulse bought Cypripedium Aki 'Pastel' at last year's show.

I started out buying 'rescue orchids' and have built up from there. The one I don't have a lot of success with is Miltoniopsis so I'd be glad to hear your tips. I don't have any Miltonia.

I think the problem is that I don't water enough. All my orchids get watered/fed once a week and Miltoniopsis could probably do with more water than that!
