Default Newbie on the block

hi guys, nice to meet u all, my name is Nick and i'm a newbie orchid grower on the block ^^"

i started with a common purple phal that i purchased from walmart at the beginning of May and it is definitely a great starter; it has been quite problem free =) i bought it in bud and unfortunately all the buds blasted except for 2 which is still in bloom after 6+ weeks; not to mention itz spiking again hurray!!

today i went to an orchid specialty shop and i bought 5 other orchids after having a really long chat with the owner (she was closing up so it was a sale so most plants were $5-15). i bought a Neofinetia falcata, dendrobium honey white (could someone help me with the full name? thanks), dendrobium kingianum, Odcdm Russiker's Gold, and a paph hybrid of the cross delenofii X mogueffianum (could someone help me with the spelling too)

im really excited and i hope they will grow and bloom nicely. the neofinetia is in bud and going to bloom very soon too =)

any comments or anything i should know in specific about these particular ones? thanks

Hi Nick. Let me welcome you aboard. Yes many people start with Phals (and lots stick with them ) Sorry, I don't have first-hand experience with the others you purchased, except I am not know for much success on dendros. I hope to see pics some time of your purchases (especially in bloom.

Aboard Nick, yes so many start with a phal or two and your same experience with blasting is not uncommon. We all learn from our mistakes with orchids but actually they are pretty solid plants, tempermental at times, dendrobiums whine way to much for some but it sounds like you have just begun...addiction is fun

Here is a few webpages in which you can get a grip on cultural habits of your new chids.

Neofinetia falcataCulture of Neofinetia falcata -

AOS cultural sheetsAmerican Orchid Society - Orchids

Dendrobium Kingianum
New Hampshire Orchid Society - Dendrobium kingianum

Odcdm Russiker's Gold = Odontoglossum x Oncidium
The Orchid Works

Just a bit of cultural differences in each.

Don't hesitate to ask a question and many of our members will chime in to help....glad you found us

Oh, btw ... we love s
