Default Phal leaf disease problem. Arthur

Hello from Edmonton, Alberta (new to the site)
I have been growing orchids for about 8 years and have a small collection. Recently my Phals are showing yellow blotches on the leaves which are increasing in size and ultimately are turning brown. On some plants they cover about 50% of the leaves. Flowering is still normal. Have I got a virus? Temperature has been about 75 F but air flow was almost none existant.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

First of all, Welcome to the board!

Second, sounds like you have some rot going on. Brown spots on Phals are NOT good

To start with, try to get better ventillation. Then secondly watch the watering. Usually brown spots on leaves, that increase in size over time, are a sign of high humidity and low air movement. If it were me, I would keep the humidity the same and get a fan that blows across the orchids to increase air movement. Rot seldom occurs when air movement is high (there are always exceptions of course).

I don't do most Dendros or large, "floofy orchids". For me it's minis (like Angraecoides), Masdies, Paphs, and others that crept in somewhere along the line. See my orchid list for complete collection (usually not current.)

You can start here, maybe this will help you identify the problem.

Aboard, it's great that you have joined our friendly and knowledgeable community. The OB has a gallery where you can post 's and be able to check out what our members are growing.

With the symptoms your giving the obvious might be rot, noting you saying you have very little air movement. Orchids love the air movement. I have to agree with Ross, but my first thought would have been a virus which are incurable. But please do not toss these jewels out just yet, if you can post a we will be able to help resolve this issue.

Phals are the easiest of orchids to grow, showing there appreciation by blooming some awesome flowers for a longer duration than other orchids. They have a way about them that most orchid hobbist can't resist.

Please if you can get a we would love to resolve your ailing phal....Oh, btw, and don't hesitate to ask away and answer away to any questions/answers you might have....

Hi lgorda from Edmonton, AB. Welcome to the OB. Are you a member of the Orchid Society of Alberta? There are a few of us Edmontonians here!

Watch your water temperature when watering and try to keep it off the leaves and out of the plant's crown. Definately you need to increase air movement, a small fan strategically placed should do the trick.
