Hello fellow orchid lovers

I love all kinds of flowering plants. I live in upstate NY so my flower gardening is limited to the indoors in the winter.

I have 12 phalaenopsis orchids---all from home centers or resuce bins in the grocery store. I know the names of some and others are no name. That's ok with me---I think they are all beautiful!


I would like to try another kind of orchid. I do well with the phals so it would be great if I could get a suggestion of what I could try. Thanks in advance!

I would try a Paphiopedilum, a slipper orchid. It was the first type of orchid I bought after getting the hang of growing Phals.

Since you are doing well with Phals, you might like to try Sarcochilus. They do not get too big and I grow mine right along with my phals.

If you are to grow just from your windows, you will need to grow lower light ochids. Phals, Doritis(also in the phal genera) and lady slippers.
If you get a grow light en the sky's the limit. Just make sure your light has a red blue spectrum for blooming or you will just have nice foliage.

I have had success blooming some oncidium types and some dens in windows as well

Hi purple. I'm going to agree with the infamous white rabbit and suggest Oncidiums, which tend to do really well, especially if you have a good room that gets some bright indirect light. As to where you can buy them, you can try your local orchid nursery, there's got to be one near New York. You could always go online as well, and Andy's Orchids is apparently highly recommended. If you have Trader Joe's there, they frequently have oncidiums and dens - or at least they do here lol
I was at a local plant 'nursery' today - and dang they had some awesome oncidiums! I am surprised I left without buying
Oh and mini-catts - I think they are supposed to do well in windowsills and don't take too much space

I would go with some other suggestions and say Paphs are a good one to try after you've been growing Phals.
