hello from NYC

Hello from NYC. Attempting to raise orchids(cattleya, paphs, phals) in a tiny 30th floor apartment facing south(we call it downtown here). I'm a complete orchid newbie, here to learn and hopefully get a few of my trash room rescued orchid to bloom...can't wait to see what their flower might look like because the only thing I'm sure about them is that they are orchid.

Hello Soundweakers! Welcome to OB! How long have you had your orchids? We love pics, so feel free to post them for us to admire. I just visited NYC two months ago, and it's such a neat place that never sleeps. I want to go back and see more.

thanks, hope you had a good visit. I have a couple of phals for about 5 years now. They had flowers when I first purchased them, and the bloom lasted a few month, and that was it. Few of them got really infested with bugs my wife trashed them, my current two plants were rescued from the dumpster in my apt. building. They were in really bad shape and somehow I managed to bring them back to life not really knowing what I"m doing, now they're slowly growing new leaves I'm curious what kind of flower they will produce.
I just purchased two new IKEA Paphs, which are very cool looking, I also have an 2 yrs old ebay purchased cattleya seeding/seedling not doing much growing.

here are a couple of pictures, and I'm going to start reading some threads before asking questions that were asked a million times.

Your first pic looks very like my Paph Maudiae. If it's not that it's probably something very similar. I love Paphs like this.

Your "chids" look beautiful! Phals are interesting. Once they go by, they take a little time to come back, but should bloom for you the next year. They need to have cooler night temps come Sept. That helps spike them. Are you fertilizing your cattleyea? That is a young plant, but add some fertilizer and see what happens. Do you have pics of the two you rescued? It's amazing to me that people actually throw them out once the blooms go by. Their loss, your gain.

Believe it or not, a lot of people treat orchids more as a bouquet/decor rather than a living/growing plant. I live in an apartment complex where each building lobby gets a fresh Orchid replacement monthly. And the building management being all NYC corporate style won't allowed the "trash room bound" orchid to be rescued in broad day light by tenents nor building employee.

Wow, where is the nearest store to buy night gogles....I too would be waiting and ready to do a little "night trashbin shopping."

I used to live on East 70th between 1st and York -- back in the 1976-1983. Even then wouldn't buy anything.
