Greetings from Italy... - Orchid Board

Hello all!
Sorry for the late presentation, but only now I realized this topic was opened...

I'm from Italy and I felt in love with orchids only 6 months ago, because before that time I was used to watch at orchids thinking how beautiful they are, wondering what kind of smart people could grow them.. And now I'm joining a forum, trying to learn something, worrying about the weather conditions, taking care of them.. Funny!

Thanks Joan, not so many and not so "particular" as most of you people have..

About 12 phals hybrids, 1 cymbidium, 3 odontoglossum, 2 oncidiums..
Just today I had to make my first re-pot of some of them and it was really hard! Hope to learn in this forum!

By the way, I'm wondering if some of you know how to check humidity inside the pot.
Phals have clear pots and no problem with them (silver roots) but what to do with the others?

What I do with my 'other ones' is that I use the skewer method & /or feel the weight of the pot. There are many threads on these subjects on the forum. If you don't find them.. just ask, don't worry everyone here is very friendly & will help you out.

Welcome to Orchid Board! Seems like you are starting on the right track to total and helpless obsession. You have come to the right place for knowledgeable and helpful people!

I agree about the skewer method, if the skewer is cool and damp then don't water. Warm and dry, time to water. Eventually you will be able to tell if it needs water by how heavy the pot is.

just a question. if one uses the skewer method; woul,n,t the roots get skewered eventually after doing this for the nth time?

I leave the skewers in the pots - they go back in the same place I took them out of

I also use the skewer method for some where I can't see the roots. Like Whiterabbit I always use the same hole to put the spike back in, and I leave it there all the time.
