Wink Introduction - Pam in San Antonio TX

Hello!

I am new to orchids, although I've enjoyed some type of horticulture for most of my 61 years. I have small collection, about 2 dozen so far, a variety of warm to intermediate-growing orchids. Until I see which kinds thrive in my setup, I'm not willing spend a lot on acquiring expensive varieties. Several of my plants were won at orchid society raffles.

About half of my collection is in semi-hydroponic culture, using PrimeAgra expanded clay (LECA-type) media. I use mainly the pots and methods from First Rays.

The unique part of my orchid growing is the LED (light-emitting diode) grow light project which I built myself. It can be seen here in a photo album:

The blog at the above link has project details, including an analysis of cost-effectiveness. As an old computer systems analyst, I just naturally delve into how things work.

I am particularly interested in corresponding with others who are using LED's -- or who are considering them.

Hi Pam...welcome aboard!
Seems like you'll fit right in here
I have a feeling you'll be getting hit with questions from those here that are growing under lights...and there are lots!

Please feel free to join us in the chat room some evening...great people, interesting conversations and the chance to discuss 'chids with other growers.
Usually starts around 8pm, est

Welcome. I've never heard of anyone growing under LEDs before, I'd love to hear more about your setup.

Welcome to the board Pam!
Now for the questions. How do LED's Work? Just kidding, well not really.
What I want to know is how you use LED's for you orchids. How big are the LED's and HOw many do you use. Plus, was it really expensive to build one?
Basically, tell us everything about LED's cuase I feel like switching over from my torchlight which I have had for 10,000 years, lol.
