Blc. flask & phalaenopsis seedlings deflasked

hello everyone, this is my 1st post well MODERATORS PLEASE move this to the APPROPRIATE FORUM , heres some cattleya flasks and a Blc. flower and a phalaenopsis tray, as you can see it was my 1st time deflasking and i am very fortunate that they are thriving. at least,

From experience this is what i reckon i should had improved on: Keeping the deflasked tray in a enclosed location in strong shade for 2-4 days then week by week opening the cover,
i didnt keep the humidity up high and the roots on the surface some how became black and some leaves looked like they were dehydrated.

a few weeks ago i sprayed my phalaenopsis seedlings with seasol, seaweed tonic and they responded well
and this week i sprayed the plants with envy which prevents evaporation rates and prevents transportation shock and keeps the seedlings up because the product strengthens the seedlings temperature range by up to 5 degrees C.

Welcome to Orchid Board! Love the flask photos. Did you do this in your home? What process did you follow? I am fascinated. I have tried plating....rather successful. I got as far as the flask and they succumbed to a mold infestation. I love to learn about how folks do this. I have seen kits and have been tempted to try one. Glad you're here!

hey,
well i havn't tried flasking in-vitro but deflasking is what im doing now..
well im going to try flasking after my seed pods develops.
i'll post pictues of my seed pods that i self pollinated hehehe then i'll try flasking.

those pictures of the cattleya flask will have flower spans of DINNER plates soo patience is the way to go!

Well, both, if you will indulge me. I have access to an autoclave and the first time I plated, I borrowed the autoclave, supplied my own media and used the laminar flow hood in the lab. I transfered the seedlings from plate to flask and waited too long to unflask them and they molded. Recently, I tried using a pressure cooker to sterilize the media and jars, but since I don't have a laminar flow hood or glove box at home, I managed, despite my intentions, to contaminate the plates. So, I grew yet another interesting mold culture quite successfullly! Tell me about your deflasking technique, if you would? I have a pod on my B. nodosa that is just volunteering for another attempt!

Hi Vanessa, Welcome to the OB and your com pot look like they are doing good. I just started to do the same, I picked up some flasks and com potted them. All I did was rinse the seedlings well with distilled water and washed all the pots,moss, and tweezers with a Listerine and distilled water solution. These com pot have been going for about 2 weeks. They live outside under a canvas awning with no direct sunlight. I give them 1/4 strength MSU fert. once a week, so far so go. I have some flasking medium coming in the mail and will be trying my first flask next week. Good Luck and keep us informed on how they do.

hey all!

well my deflasking process is quite simple as well.
all i do is carefully take the seedlings out into a bucket of warm water ( distilled or not dosen't seem to matter to me because i get lots of rain in aus.

fungicides don't seem to be needed with good care so in the compots they go, i use 2 parts propagation mix and 3- 4 parts medium sized perlite but with the perlite kept as the soil level barrier. perlite is great help if u tend to overflow with moisture and water as it doesn't store water. thus plants like phals will be less likely to rot.

then i spray the plants with a transpiration preventer e.g envy which is great help as it prevents transportation shock so no excess wilting for u! let the plants allow excess water to seep out of the pots for 5 minutes then place the compots in a zip lock for 1st week and the gradually open up as they all say!

and some seed pods that i managed to pollinate!
i cant wait to get the pod growing because its got a very refreshing tangerine scent that takes over the room.

I didn't cover the newly deflaked seedling with a bag and they have been doing good. I was worried they would get to hot,t is in the mid 80's during the day so I just have them misted a couple times a day. I hope it works out. Good Luck
