Can anyone help ID this Dendrobium? Male
Smile Can anyone help ID this Dendrobium?

Hi all, brand new to this site and pretty new to orchids in general, but I have been bit by the bug and there's no going back. I was visiting "The Domes" in Milwaukee (a group of 3 large greenhouses that are actually part of the county park system) and they had several different orchids in bloom, most of which had ID's. There was one that didn't however, and it smelled amazing. If I can figure out what it was that would be awesome (of course I'm going to buy it ). No one there knew. It definitely seems like a Dendrobium of some kind, but with being so new to this, I could be completely wrong. Thanks for any help anyone can offer!

Dendrobium NOID predominantly (or entirely) using species from section Phalaenanthe. There are just too many Dendrobium hybrids and complex breeding to definitively ID it without an accurate label.

Yes, definitely a Dendrobium with all or most ancestry from section Phalaenanthe, commonly called Den Phal types. It could be the species Dendrobium phalaenopsis (Dendrobium bigibbum) or any of thousands of hybrids from that group. Many of the hybrids sold are indistinguishable, and don't even have registered names or definite known ancestry. Culturally, it is the most typical mass market Dendrobium.

If you're looking for a fragrant white dendrobium - try dendrobium moniliforme.

The garden staff probably have records of the plants in the greenhouses - try asking them. Are you sure it was that plant that was so fragrant? Not many of that type of Dendrobium are fragrant.

Unfortunately the staff didn't, this greenhouse is a county park and the staff aren't always familiar with all of the plants unfortunately. It was definitely this Dendrobium that was fragrant. It wasn't super strong (you had to sniff the flower, it wasn't permeating the air), but it was really nice up close. I figured that it would be a long shot to find out the exact species.

That's surprising. Most botanical gardens have detailed inventory records. Mitchell Gardens did when I was a kid.

Yeah, everything else was labeled, there were several other orchids, of course the only one I was interested in was a NoID.
