Interesting Complex Hybrid Phalaenopsis
Default Interesting Complex Hybrid Phalaenopsis

I recently purchased a "mini" phalaenopsis because it looks quite interesting, at least to me. It has more slender skinny leaves than the usual broad leaves that a complex phal has.

As you can see, the petals are smaller and they have a streak of pink on the petals along with purple spots. Also, one of the flowers came out deformed.

I know i wont get a 100% identification because that would require a test but just based on the physical proof, does anyone have any ideas what this may be?

One thing you can try is to contact a manager at the place where you bought it, and ask them for contact information for their supplier. If you keep following the supply chain backwards you may be able to contact the grower. They might be able to tell you what it is if you send them a photo.

Without a picture that clearly show the leaves I can't be sure, but since this isn't a standard full size complex Phal I can speculate. Minis have more species of various plant and flower forms in the background than standard large Phals. Narrower leaves could have come from several species. This one clearly has Phal equestris ancestry, which often has more narrowly oval leaves.

The petals with the slight pink stripe are showing a little bit of the lip characteristics, or in other words, these flowers are slightly peloric. Sometimes peloric clones are more prone to deformed flowers, but they just happen sometimes in any orchid.

There isn't anything about this plant that is really unusual for a complex mini Phal hybrid. A precise ID is not possible.

It's very pretty. I've seen ones just like it at my local retail stores and I've been tempted!

It looks peloric from my untrained eye. Very pretty, either way. Would this be considered a harlequin type?
