Anybody heard of Phal. Doud Violet?
Default Anybody heard of Phal. Doud Violet?

I have miniature phal with the name of Doud Violet on the label. I'm trying to verify the name but haven't found any reference to it anywhere. Anybody ever heard of it? Dave

I did a quick Google search and found numerous references to this hybrid.

There are many hybrids with "trade names" that are not registered with RHS. Several reasons why a breeder would not register a hybrid - there is a cost for registering a name, and also the registration process requires that parentage be listed. If a hybrid is good for retail sale but not good enough for submission for judging, not a lot of ROI for registering (casual buyers of pot plants don't typically care about registration) and some breeders also may treat the parentage as a "trade secret" that they don't want to disclose. Again, if a breeder sees more cost than benefit, they just slap a name on the plant but may not register it to make it "official?

jkofferdahl: I saw several links to this variety as well, but none of them have any relevant content.

Roberta: That makes sense. I also thought perhaps my label was wrong and there might be someone out there who could correct it.

Confirming... there is no registered Phal hybrid with Doud in the name.

In addition to Roberta's comments, with an unregistered trade name the supplier can use the name with any plant that meets the same general description - in this case any predominately violet mini Phal - buy whatever is cheap on the wholesale seedling market, bring it to bloom and slap one of their trade names on it. Doud Violet may not always be the same plant at all.
