Laelia ghillanyi yellow form? Male
Default Laelia ghillanyi yellow form?

I bought this rupiculous laelia this summer, with the tag L. ghillanyi, but it bloomed with a pale yellow flower rather than lavender. Orchidspecies.org shows a yellow form, and it looks like mine. So far so good. The description there says that the inflorescence is 'shorter to just barely longer than the leaf', which agrees with my plant (infl 1.0", leaf 1.7"), but it also says it flowers in the Spring, but mine just opened (November), with another flowering in June of this year.

One of the in-situ photos shows a dried up inflorescence which is much longer than any of the leaves, which contradicts the description.

How do I find the 'official' description and dimensions of this or any plant?

There is another tag in your pot that says L. briegeri (if I'm not mistaken), which could easily be the proper plant, with yellow flowers...

I should have explained that tag. I received the plant with a ghillanyi tag, had questions about it and relabeled the tag briegeri, then read some more and found that ghillanyi has a yellow form.

If you look at the description for briegeri, orchidspecies.com says it has a 8-10" inflorescence with a single flower. Mine is much shorter (1") and has had 4 and 2 flowers per inflorescence in the time I've owned it. Also the color of briegeri is much more intense than mine. Note the length of the dried inflorescence shown in the in-situ photo for ghillanyi.

So I'm still looking for an authoritative ID.

L. briegeri is also usually a much brighter yellow. So what it IS may still be in question,, but that is one thing that it surely isn't
