Sorry about the photo thing. I'm still learning how to use the board. Had problems from the get go with adding under my list to begin with. Kept wiping out the info I had in already. That's why the info about leaf with the scratched code CH7303 isn't there anymore. I've got a feeling the lady knew it was infected & I did not. Also not knowing, quick soaked other plants in same water as Cattleya.

Thank you - I see it now.

Yes, that first photo is a textbook example of flower color break. Color break a little less obvious in the second photo, due to the photo angle, but I think I see it there too.

LinS, I would try to get a refund if possible. I would also be thinking of crossing that vendor off my list of places to buy orchids. First photo - was it blooming like this when you bought it?

If you can't get a refund, I would still discard the plant.

Unfortunately yes & I didn't know that's what the virus is/does. I contacted the seller yesterday about ID of it, sent pics, no reply. Got a feeling she knew exactly what was going on. Maybe even remembers me? I just bought it on Feb. 23. I was sucker!

From here on, even if an orchid seems healthy, it is not good practice to soak the plants together. Water all of them with fresh water in a way that it does not drip thru onto other plants.

I did the same thing in my early days and suspect its what caused a number of mine to have virus. I invested in some virus test strips and tossed any that tested positive. But I can't afford to test them all, so just use a more sanitary way of caring for them now and hope that most are clean or don't spread to others. If they show definite signs, like colour break, they are out the door!

It doesn't mean all of yours are virused now from soaking with that one. It may not happen 1st or 2nd time around, but you won't know unless they are tested. There are also other viruses and we can't test for everything. But these two viruses I mentioned earlier are the most common and seem to be the worse.

If it was in bloom, any experienced orchid grower should know that was virus. That's too bad. I would fight for a refund. But beyond that, chalk it up to a learning experience. We all have to learn somehow and often it is in the school of hard knocks. console yourself by finding another nice orchid to replace it. There should be some orchid shows happening at this time of year.

Thanks. I only have the 3. Unfortunately for the plants I learn the hard way. Because @ this point...think it's easier to burn 'em. The Den. Royal Wings only got a few min. soak once. Maybe it'll be ok?

I wouldn't toss them I would just use good handling and watering practices from here on and all should be OK. If in the future any of these bloom showing signs of virus, then at that point toss them.

Regarding CH7303, there is a grower in Hawaii (Maui) that uses codes beginning with CH to denote Cattleya Hybrid. I'm not saying it's one of their plants, just saying that CH does not necessarily indicate Carter & Holmes.

LinS, sorry this whole experience happened to you. I guess it is better to have learned with only 3 plants in your care instead of 100.

So true about the 3 instead of 100. I'm bummin bad enough. Couldn't imagine if I had way more before it happened. Did research place I bought it from, small business, probably not going to do anything for me. Figure I'll just get rid of Cattleya & watch the others. I know this is discouraging me from buying any more.

The odds of this happening again real soon are likely not high if you buy from reputable growers. Not to say they can't sometimes have a sick one too. Don't let it stop you enjoying a rewarding hobby. It's just one of the things to be careful of. And you are lucky you learned the lesson of safe handling early in your orchid collecting career

Don't get discouraged; it is easy to buy healthy plants, and they are very rewarding to grow.

If you bought this at a large orchid show, the organizers of the show will also be very interested in your story. They absolutely don't want virused plants sold at their show. Send the information to the show organizers. They will help you get a refund.

I seem to recall reading you bought this plant in Homestead? Was it at an orchid show?

]If you read through other threads here of people posting photos of plants in flower, you will find names of many good nurseries.

Good luck!
