Dendrobium (?) NOID and Oncidium Tiny Twinkle 'Fragrance Fantasy'

I've got these two plants at the supermarket this evening. The lady at the Plants Corner offered them to me for 5 CHF each (4.5$) as they were "already on their way to the bin"... I could not resist it..

The label on the first one just says: "Dendrobium, keep warm and water regularly" To be honest, I have no idea which Dendrobium this could be, and would not even be surprised if it happens to be something different... but as I admitted, I have no clue!!! Can someone of the Dendrobium - fans give a hint on its identification? I know, without flowers is always difficult, but I just want to have a better idea on how to keep it...



The other one is an Oncidium Tiny Twinkle 'Fragrance Fantasy' (at least, this is what is written on the label) a nice tiny plant with a very strong scent... with some fantasy, I could say it is chocolate, but it is a bit too pungent for chocolate... though an interesting strong scent..

Hmm... well it does look very much like Onc. Twinkle 'Fragrance Fantasy' and could very much be the same thing. I'm not sure I've ever heard of Tiny Twinkle before but then again there are so many orchid hybrids on the market today the name could very be correct.

The dendrobium, on the other hand, needs to bloom to be able to identify it, and that might be tricky too.

hhmm... after some google research... and also here in OB... and in my list of European Nurseries... I think the Dendrobium could be something like Dendrobium kingianum or something similar... would anyone here agree or disagree?

as I said earlier, I know a final ID will be close to impossibe, but at least a hint for its cultural needs...

Stasisgate: Oncidium Tiny Twinkle 'Fragrance Fantasy' or 'Red Fantasy' are commonly sold here in Europe. They are some of the standard supermarkt orchids here... I have never heard of Onc Twinkle, but when googling for it I found a pic showing a plant quite similar to mine, just a bit bigger... maybe that's the difference... I don't know for sure...

the first one is a dendrobrium kingianum for sure, itz not that hard to id that one even without the flowers b/c their canes are quite distinct from other dens.

the bottom is some kind of twinkle for sure, but it matters not. most oncidiums have a common culture.

kingianum needs a dry and winter chill for it to produce lots of flowers for the coming springtime. as for the oncidium, low-moderate light, evenly most especially in flower and intermediate temps

I have a NOID Den that looks very similar to this as well but mine is in bloom right now. The first two buds open up just today. Now I have a better idea of what it is. I've had it for years and it always bloomed so I guess I never worried about it being NOID. Now I know that it is a dendrobrium kingianum. Thanks.

I have a Den kingianum that has about 9 or 10 spikes on it...TOO EXCITED!!!

I've had this plant for about two years and it didn't rebloom last year. I read the article posted on this site about the warm/cold nature of these plants, tried and well, IT WORKED! It's really fragrant too!

and mine is red. Maybe it is 'Red Fantasy.' In any case, the flowers on it are very small, maybe smaller than on the one you have.

I think mine is the same as a picture of one on Ray's website. But the pic on Ray's doesn't indicate which dendrobrium kingianum it is. Here is a link to the pic.

GreggC, the flowers are very small (1x0.5 cm) maybe they look bigger in the than what tehy really are...


as for all here, thanks with the ID of the Dendrbium (did not know it would be that easy ). I will give it a cold rest next winter... I also found the article on Dend. kingianum here in OB...
