Default Not too sure what this is, could be orchid or could be a nettle

Found in North Carolina near Hot Springs and Route 209.
In Rhododendron maxima forest habitat.
August 10 2014.

Can anyone help. I wish the photo was better so I could tell what it was.

ID Needed please. Could this be a native orchid? by czar3233, on Flickr

I have no idea, but it does look kind of nettle-y.

You should have stopped by while you were in NC. I could have foisted some orchids on you.

Oh, heh. Didn't know you existed at the time. But maybe in the future. Do you have any growing in your area? Also I was in the smokies, is that where you are?

I'm in the Raleigh area. We have about 50 native species. And then the 100 or so in my house check this out: Wild Orchids Photo Gallery by Kelvin Taylor at pbase.com

Tindomul:
I do not think that it is an orchid - I think I know what this is, but I just can't come up with the name. I do believe it is of the nettle family, Uticaceae, though if it is what I am thinking of, the "thorns" are not that prickly, and it grows in a damper area, such as near a stream. It looks like this is a pretty close-up shot, how long would say the stalk that is pictured was?
Whatever it is, it makes a great pic! Very alien-looking!

Yea at this point I am sure it is stinging nettle, Urtica dioica.
Thanks for the help!

Tindomul;
Well, I can say that if you brushed against the leaves or the little spikes, you would not have had to question if it was stinging nettle. I was not sure that it was the stinging variety, as I never really got that close to the flowers to see this view of them. My worst encounter with this plant was when I and some friends were out hiking in the Southern Illinois area. I had to take a leak and was not paying attention to what plant I was using to shield the others from getting a porno view or from snapping a pic and posting it on the net, until my "whipperbill" (to use my Dad's nickname for this particular anatomical part - LOL) started burning! I have NEVER hurt that bad. It lasted about a hour and a half, and our hike was over as I was in really bad pain with every step and my friends had to go back to camp as they were so tired from laughing.
I avoid nettles at all costs now, as you can probably understand!
Still - what an interesting photo.....really cool flower head. I think of crab spiders with their legs in the air when I first look at it! Thanks for the post - could have done without the memory, though......

and yeah if its stinging nettle you wont have to guess. That stuff will break you out in large welts and almost drive you mad. I got into some fishing once and I think all that felt good was to stay soaked in the cold water of the lake. I forgot about fishing real fast. Almost had me in tears but I was getting too mad to cry. Everyone else was laughing at me bec my face swelled up like professor clump and my eyes slammed shut. 40 years ago and it was like yesterday. I dont play with nettle either
