I saw this beautiful phalaenopsis on Facebook and I was wondering if anyone knew what hybrid it was, and most important, where I could get one, or two, or three, thanks. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays!!!

Phal. Hilo Lip is gorgeous, but I've heard it's so inbred that the plants can be fussier than a pure species; it's a relatively slow grower, reluctant to flower, prone to root- and crown rot, and likes to be kept drier than ordinary Phal hybrids.

Just giving you a heads up if you decide to get one.

I can't comment on Hilo Lip being a fussy grower, but the family tree does not show a significant level of inbreeding. Some species and hybrids do appear more than once in the background of this hybrid, but even if they are the same clones in every case it is mostly 3+ generations back and other breeding lines are also involved. It just doesn't qualify as inbred.

On the other hand, many pure species common in collections are definitely inbred, with one or more generations of selfing in the recent background of the plants, the highest possible level of inbreeding in one generation.

Hilo Lip has been used as a parent of at least 72 registered hybrids, at least 30 as the pod parent. And since the white lip is fairly dominant many of those hybrids tend to have white lips also. Finding the clone pictured here might be difficult, but there are certainly other Phals of similar appearance out there. Ask any large scale Phal grower to recommend a Hilo Lip type or a white lip Phal and they will probably have some suggestions.

Personally, I have no idea since I've never had it, only a very similar NoID. I'm only repeating what I've read on different forums and I think it was on the Big Leaf Orchid Forum when I asked abut my NoID that I received this information (I could've used the search function, too, can't remember). I think the 'inbreeding' might refer to too many selflings, but I don't remember (it was over 2 years ago).
