I've been lurking here for a long time, but I was never inspired to join (out of laziness) until I got this orchid as a gift. I'm fairly certain it's a Phal of some sort, but the leaves have a totally different texture from my other Phals with much more prominent veining and I'm not used to seeing a perfectly healthy Phal that naturally has a brown spike (seriously!). I've only ever seen green Phal spikes... or maybe I'm crazy.

But the leaves really trip me out. You can't really see them in this picture, but I was hoping we could identify it by the flowers, which also look a little "different" from other Phals. It came to me identified as a Phal and the leaves and flowers both look for the most part like a Phal; they're just slightly different enough to leave me scratching my head.

(I tried inserting the picture, but for some reason the form won't allow my photo URL, so I've attached a copy.)

I can't be 100% sure but it looks like (at least)one of your flowers is pyloric. The leaves look normal to me though and nothing else stands out as abnormal. Maybe you could post a few more pics when you can (you must have 5 posts),

I have a similar one named Phal. Chiada Stacy 'Chocolate Drop', same shape and it's a mini, but the coloring on the flowers is darker, almost black. The spikes were very dark as well.

I don't have any pictures but you can Google image search it and it should come up.

All of the flowers are actually pyloric. I'll post a close-up when I can, but any idea which hybrid it might descend from?

Actually, escualida, I just looked up yours and it looks almost exactly alike.

That is not a peloric flower.

Peloria (or pelorism) is defined as there being symmetry where none is expected. In the case of orchids, that would mean a lip that looks like the petals, or the petals looking like the lip, neither of which is the case.

I spent a lot of time living in Thailand, so my English/Thai translation is probably off. I was under the impression that had something to do with the color pattern, not symmetry.

Peloric is when the petals mutate to imitate the lip I believe.
I don't think it has anything to do with colour.

Yep, probably my translation is off. Anyway, does anybody have other suggestions than the Chocolate Drop? It looks a lot like one. This orchid is definitely not a NOID, but for the life of me I cannot remember what it was. The original tag only had the genus and species on it, no cultivar. But I only remember that it's a Phalaenopsis and apparently looks incredibly like the Chocolate Drop. I just want to explore all possibilities.

I was referring to one of the flowers which appears to be missing a petal. But the general form does seem a bit off. Other than that it looks great.
Does pyloric mean mutated or is it repeated structures?
