Succulent or Cactus and I.D. would be greatly appreciated

I'm hopeful that someone can help me identify this plant. I'm not sure if it's a cactus or a succulent, but it needs to be repotted so I need some cultural information. This plant was a single brown shriveled segment a few years back and it appeared to be very near death when I plopped pot and all down in a small sandy area with a few other cacti and succulents. It began recovering almost immediately and at an alarming rate so I left it in the pot undisturbed. As you can tell it's overdue for a repot...problem is the roots have firmly attached themselves into the sandy loam beneath the pot. I'd leave it as is, but the pot looks like it's restricting the smaller growths. Does anyone have an i.d. for this one? Thanks. http://www.flickr.com/photos/77290510@N06/s.

A cactus it is. Name ??? Why can't you just dig it up, roots and all, clean off the sandy loam and find a suitable size pot? I'd use some cactus potting soil. You probably will have to break the pot it is in in order to not have to cut off the roots growing through the drainage hole. Apparently, it likes the conditions where you have it, so, put it back there.

It's Cereus tetragonus, and Beverly is right about its care.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your help. I had no idea they could grow to 6 feet...a good thing to be aware of when choosing a pot and location. Future growth in this spot would be an impractical choice because it's too narrow and borders the concrete path to my front door. I wouldn't want this cactus to get trampled on and I wouldn't want the cactus to snag a guest.
