Question trouble reading the tag

Hi there,
I'm having trouble finding information on this orchid. I'm thinking I'm not reading it right. Can anyone tell me what this stands for, "proch cochleata alba." Thank you

Hi,
The correct name would be Prosthechea cochleata var. alba.

Thanks for the link, I wasn't sure what this orchid would look like. I won it in a raffle at an orchid society meeting. Thanks again.

This was previously known as Encyclia cochleata.
I have two of them and you're in for a treat!
Once they start blooming, it seems to go on forever!

I look forward to seeing your

I have this plant and it came labeled as Encyclia cochleata but its got a purple "hood" or "octopus head" on it rather then white like this one.

What would its "new" name be? Just Prosthechea cochleata or do I get a var. to?? I feel cheated with one!

Hi, D&S
You have got the type of the species (the one with purple hood). So the correct name is Prosthechea cochleata alone. The term "var." stands for "variety" and is used when the clone is not typical. In the previous case, the hood is creamy white denoting an albino variety (or alba, although not technically correct).
This plant was once known as Encyclia cochleata (also as Epidendrum cochleatum, if memory serves me well), but now the accepted name is Prosthechea cochleata.

Purple headed ones are cool, too.
You can always give it it's own name
