Newbie need assist with Phalaenopsis ID

OK,

So here goes with my first post. I was walking through Lowe's, minding my own business, when I passed by the orchid display. Mildly interested I looked over the offerings and saw this one in a 4" pot and at first could not believe what I saw. I picked it up and yes, there are two different orchids in the same pot. The one in the background is a phal NOID, but I am more interested in the white one. It is nearly totally white with just a small yellow orange colored spot on the tip of the column. The lip is also white and quite large. The leaves are skinny and pointed at the ends. There are two spikes and they each are as big as a number two pencil. Also at each node a leaf is forming. The pot is identified as Phalaenopsis In Tropictropic and that's it. I have done an extensive internet search, and am at a loss. Any help would be much appreciated. I don't need a full scientific name if that is even possible. Just, is this a Phal, and if not what is it? I call it my Snow White.

I'm afraid your phals are both NoIDs. Phals are mass produced by the thousands and if there is no tag it is impossible to get the correct name. Snow White is a great name for the white one. There is no lip on the photo, do the other white ones have lips? I believe the small yellow you are seeing is the anther cap.

None of the flowers have lips unless the large petal at the bottom of each is considered the lip. This bottom petal has a small white protuberance just below where it connects to the column.They are so much different than the "normal" looking Phal, that I am not sure what it is.

I think it is a mutation of a standard NoID phal.

Usually the lower petal forms a lip, but sometimes that is missing. I've had that on individual flowers before, but not on a whole plant.

It will be interesting to see if it happens on it's next flowering. If so it's probably a genetic mutation, if not then it is likely it was an enviromental one while the flowers were forming.

Pine Ridge Orchids has a peloric phal that looks similar to what your "Snow White" looks like, its called Artic Threshold. Unfortunately, yours will always be a NoID unless you can get the grower of yours to verify its true identity.

Alittle background info for you!
This type of flower all started in the early 1990's with a cross Carmela's registered called Phal World Class. Out of this cross was one they called 'Bigfoot' for the type of lip you see on your "Snow White". They used to sell compots of this and they went pretty quickly. I remember when I went to order they had all sold out, no internet ordering at the time!

I talked with Terry at Pine Ridge and he confirms Arctic Threshold. Drat...still like Snow White.

That is a great collection and I can see why you love the Pelorics. The blooms on mine are about done and starting to look a little ragged at the edges. Terry has strongly suggested separating the two and re-potting when finished blooming. I already have a Japanese royal blue orchid pot standing by.
