Definately Vanda Alliance. Aerides came to mind for me also. I had a monster lawrenceana i just sold off. Looks similiar. As mentioned, lots of light required for blooming. Like it warm and humid.

Default Arachnis?

Hello,
could this possibly be an Arachnis commonly known as the spider or scorpion orchid?

In Orchids of Asia [Mark L. Isaac-Williams, 1998] Arachnis are described as having [distichous] leaves that are "oblong, narrowing at the tip into a bilobed apex."

I actually have Arachnis flos-aeris, so I'll take a photo tommorow and post it for comparison.

Damian.

Dave, I tried to google a good pic of an aerides lawrenceana but none of them have a good view of the leaves. The best one I saw, the leaves look flatter than on my plant. On my plant the leaves are corrugated for want of a better word.

Damian I have several spider orchid which I purchased recently so they haven't flowered yet. They are quite different to this orchid, they are like a large, tougher version of an epidendrum.

I would like to see a pic of your arachnic flos aeris though. Marion

Default Arachnis

Hi Marion,
I got my Arachnis [top stem cuttings] from Queenslnd back in Spring last year [my second attempt at growing them- read keeping alive ].

They're outside in a coconut fibre lined basket filled with more loose fibre and sphagnum moss and to my amazement are actually putting out roots despite the cold weather here in Victoria.

I am going to have to move them for the winter though as they have no protection from the rain.

Whatever your NOID is, it looks very healthy

Yep those are just like my spider orchids. I got them as cuttings from Ebay so I don't know what specific spider orchid they are. I bought two cuttings of two different types of spider orchid and the seller sent them bundled together and they all looked alike! I've put 2 in one pot and 2 in another. Knowing my luck I'll have put one of each kind in each pot! LOL Oh well I'll know when they flower.

Does NOID mean No Idea or No Identification? I've seen a few words on this site that I haven't come across before.

Hi Marion,
mine came from Ebay too! Probably the same seller..

I got a brown & yellow flowering one, a red one and a red one with a purple lip- they are mixed up as well but I'm just happy they seem to be acclimatising themselves to my weather.

Yep - no idea
Damian.

Yes it does sound like the same seller! They are good cuttings though, big and healthy. I'm in Perth so it's generally warmer here and we don't get any frost where I live near the coast. I don't have any where indoors to put orchids so all mine have to stay outside. I didn't realise that some orchids like to be kept dry during winter until recently. I'm going to have to move my dens under the metal patio.

It's supposed to mean No I.D. (identification) but No Idea is kinda cute
