Possible Phal. schilleriana parent / grandparent / greatgrandparent?? - Orchid Board

Earlier in the week I brought this guy home from the supermarket - the mottled leaves had made me take a closer look and after learning more about my Phal. Wiganiae last week I was convinced this might be slightly more special than the other NoIDs in the (rapidly growing) collection.

It looks very like a Phal. schilleriana, and Camille very kindly did a check, and we figured that while it clearly isn't the real thing it probably has something of it in it's parentage somewhere. Taking a look at the grower's website didn't yield any specific info either.

However, I've just been to an orchid show and low and behold, one of the vendors had the exact orchid! Ok - so I need to be careful throwing around words like 'exact' but if not 'exact' then somewhere in that neighbourhood! His was a Nobby's Amy cross with schilleriana.

So - I've attached pics, and would love to hear what you all think! While I know it will never be more than a NoID, it's fun to know what it might have been if only for that little white label!

The mottled leaves and bloom coloration are both indicative of schilleriana. The only way to be sure, though, is to track the registration.

I've sent an email to the nursery it came from - we'll see if they tell me anything! It would be nice to know but if not it's still been fun finding out!

Ditto jkofferdahl in that it "looks" like schilleriana is somewhere in the wood pile. Whatever, it sure is pretty!

I agree!!

It's jam packed with buds - I'm just praying they open after a repot, and a huge drop in temperature overnight! Can't wait to see it in full bloom!

Nicky, the day after we chatted about your phal, I found nearly the same one! It also has a lot of schilleriana in it, but the lip is yellow and it's more pink. I'll never get an ID for it, but it's so cute. They blooms were a bit beat up since it was on the clearance rack, but I got it for 1€. It's a mini the leaves are only 8-9cm long. I suspect it was forced to bloom, but will grow into a normal sized plant.

Can't believe you got it for only 1 euro! Amazing - that's some good bargain shopping!!

Like I said, the blooms are pretty beat up! But that doesn't really matter since the root system is great and the plant is overall healthy. I did have pass up a triple spike Phal Baldan's Kaleidoscope on clearance for 5€, because the roots were rotten mush.

Too bad, I've been wanting one of those for a long time!
And many orchids are a bargain here, there only have a short distance to travel from the grower. Supermarkets often sell freshly arrived phals for 3-6€

So pretty - it'll be lovely when you have it reflowering (no pressure!!). It's very sweet being that tiny!

Sounds like you get some great bargains, especially if they are in good shape. Shame about the Baldan's Kaleidescope - 3 spikes must have been hard to pass up... but mush is mush!

I wish we lived closer. I have two big Baldan's which have keiki'ed and are starting some big fat spikes. I would just give you one or a baby, if that is what you would prefer! Other pretty Phals with lovely foliage are stuartiana & celebensis. Just random thoughts!
