Probably a Laelia? Or Why do I do this?

After my 4 mile run this am, I saw the Botanic Gardens Fall Sale sign. Why O Why do I do this to myself?



So I of course hound hubby to get up so I can go to the plant sale as soon as they open the gates (the orchids always go fast).

They had a really nice Laelia (?) which of course I wanted but the tag had been lost!!

I am hoping that I can identify it. Anyway it is about 15" tall with maybe 10 or 12 p-bulbs and 2 active sheaths with spikes. One spike is blooming (4 blooms I think) and the other has 5 or 6.

The bloom is very similar to the Tenebrosa but instead of orange petals, they are a light green florescence and the column has some white striping in with the fuchsia.

Any ideas before I post the picture? This NOID needs a name so I can show it.

If not, I will just enjoy looking at it.

Edited to add the p-bulbs are really elongated, almost reed like and very straight upright.

wow the Blc. Apache Sunrise 'Von Scholl' looks like part of the body almost! kind of like it a lot.
is it possible anyway to have positive identification from a flower?
wonder if you can ask the BG where they get their plants from and then you contact the source. how much did you pay for it?

I think the Blc. Apache Sunrise suggestion is on the right track. There are many other similar hybrids as well. Search for photos of Blc. Keowee and Blc. Memoria Vida Lee for some other possibilities.

It came from their greenhouse probably from a member donation (someone probably passed away). They are not a garden center.

It was $25 - a steal.

I think I found the name. Blc Tom Courtney which is now known as Mariottara Tom Courtney.

It is a hybrid of Brassavola nodosa and Rhynchosophrocattleya (Brassolaeliocattleya) Golden Embers.

hmmm... in that picture, the Blc Tom Courtney almost looks unifoliate....mine is definitely bifoliate.

The Blc. Tom Courtney is always unifoliate. Even if you find a name for your plant, however, there is no guarantee that it is correct - you've already seen how similar different hybrids can appear, and if you were to tell the judges that you got the name off the web by looking at pictures they would still consider it a noid. The best way to try and get the name is to try and trace the plant but that may be impossible.

that is what I meant.
even if it looks like another one off the web... just one grandparent could be different and anyway some features be recessive. so even if it looks alike it does not mean it is the same...

could be a look alike like there are among us humans!

I saw a photo of a red Bc that looked nothing like a Brassavola. someone could think it is just a Cattleya.

I think there is no way to know for sure and it is important to love the bastrd childs whose parents are not known as much as those that have a royal pedigree...
it is important to approximate so you give the right culture... but
how can you know for sure the parentage when there are maybe a dozen different ancestors?

Thanks for your information. I will go up to the BG and ask them where the plant came from. They might even have the tag lying around. They don't have a lot of orchids.

As far as finding the name off the web, I just enjoy the mystery and the hunt for identification. I should have known better than to try a Catt hybrid.

Oh well. It sure is pretty.
