It appears that this orchid can grow in direct sunlight. I want to pot it though and keep it inside near a window. Do you think it will survive/thrive?

that would not be a problem for Ansellia... I have a plant potted here too and a friend of mine has a large specimen plant grown near a window too.. it i sa bit difficult for her to get many flowers on that plant, but she gets some every year...

In Europe you should grow Ansellia's outside in summer. If you increase the amount of light steadily even direct sunlight should be beneficial.

Dormant bulb...

Do you have a picture of this "dormant bulb".

Did he happen to say whether or not it was an orchid?

A lot of garden variety bulbs grown in the US come from the South African region.

There are also a lot of unusual terrestrial orchids from your area as well.

If it is an orchid, it's best to find out what it is and figure things out before it breaks dormancy. Whatever little bits of information you gathered or can gather from this person the better.

If its not that species you suspected (Bulb. sandersonii), my bet is it is Bulb. maximum.

I have re-hydrated the stumps/bases and new growth has begun to sprout. Should I cut back the old stems just above the 2nd or 3rd node like I would with other orchids?

What exactly are you referring to?

Are you referring to cutting the canes?

If so, that's not advisable.

If you're referring to the new growths on the stump. Nobody really knows what it is to begin with, so no one can really tell you what to cut or what not to cut.

The previous poster didn't post a positive ID for the "stump" as well.

So the reasonable thing to do is to not cut anything.

Hi guys

In July 2010 I bought an orchid described as a Zimbabwean orchid from a street vendor in Cape Town, South Africa. The plant does not seem to be doing as well as it did when I first bought it, but one of the orchids seem to be developing what I presume is a spike! I am attching a photo of the plant to hear what you guys think (if this is a spike or not). I marked the spike with a red circle. Please help me out! I'm already so excited!

Although the development of the spike would seem to indicate a happy plant, the rest of the orchids on the mount looks a bit shrivelled or seem to be losing their leaves. I am posting a picture of this for some advice from you guys on what I should do. The mount "sits" on potting soil, because I hope to revive the it. The mount has only been placed on top of the soil today and was previously sitting on bark. However, I took care to ensure that the addition of potting soil does not cause the orchids' roots to sit in water.
