Question Dendrobium/Oncidium Cross Pollination

If I pollinated an Oncidium with pollen from a Dendrobium. Would that be a Dendrocidium?

I am definitely not an expert but I think its unlikely the cross would work - generally plants need to be within the same alliance - tho there are exceptions. I'm sure other members with more knowledge than myself will chime in

Yeah, they are not genetically compatible. Chromosomes need to match up (or be close) to produce viable offspring.

That's sad because it would have been a cool cross!

Usually, if they're from the same alliance they can take (some might not).

Dendrobium & Oncidium dreams aside...

Somebody thought it was cool to cross a Stanhopea with a Coryanthes. And we now have that person to thank for Coryhopea to grace the world.

It's kinda like that fugly dog that people bred that looks like a zombie.

Be careful what you wish for...

Don't think such hybrid is viable.

I'm just throwing a wild guess here, I think if such hybrid were to be made between dendrobium and south american species, Cattleya would be better match for Dendrobium morphological speaking.

I read in an old book that a scientist in Indonesia has succesfully cross a Den biggibum and some Catt species. This happen in the 70s. Due to lack of reference, I kind of doubt this ever happen but if it's real it would be very exciting.

I think oncidium is more fitting with Cymbidium and grammatophyllum. Again this is by looking at the morphological structures.

If ever such hybrid was ever successful to be created, it might result in a sterile plants.

Sorry Psyched, Cattleya and Dend are incompatible too.
You get these things called alliances, and for the most part, not always, these will be able to be crossed. ie, the Cattleya alliance - Catts, Laelias, Brassavolas, Barkerias, Sophronitis etc. will all, for he most part, cross.
but, a Cattleya and a Dendrobium, or a Phal, or anything else not in the same alliance, will NOT cross!
