Default Maxillaria anceps?

Hi,
I came across this Maxillaria sp. in Nicaragua that looks like something close to Maxillaria anceps Ames & C. Schweinf., but differs from the material of Maxillaria anceps that I usually see arround here. Anybody familiar with this species?

Here's one place to look:

Jay's Internet Orchid Species Photo Encyclopedia - M - Max

There are many species that are variable and haven't been described, so it's possible that it's something new.
It does look close to Max. anceps.

Dear Sune,

It is definetly not Max. anceps which has an ascending habit and uniformly pale green flowers.

I am pretty sure that your plant is a partially opened Max. hedwigae - a Max. rufescens relative with white flowers and an orange lip. The habit and pseudobulbs are also a perfect match.

The species is named for Hedwig Hamer, Fritz Hamer's wife. Hamer wrote the orchids of El Salvador and also the treatment for the Flora Nicaragua.

Hope that helps, Eric

Thumbs up

Dear Eric,

You are absolutely right, it's the Maxillaria hedwigiae Hamer & Dodson as you mentioned. One of the many beautiful orchids of Nicaragua/Central America. It is frequently found between Guatemala and Costa Rica.
