After a couple of flowerings, most seedlings of new crosses are not worth keeping. Hybridizer's descriptions are what they hope for in the few good ones. There are crosses that produced lots of great progeny, but that is rare.

Seed grown plants can have tremendous variety.
If you cross two yellows, most will be yellow.
If you cross two dissimilar parents, almost anything can happen.

A few years ago Fred Clarke (SVO) crossed the spotted C. Katherine Clarkson with C. Cosmic Angel (splash type), looking for new combinations. Here is a photo of 5 of them for reference.
