No-ID Oncidium
Default No-ID Oncidium

Hello Everyone,

I purchased this Oncidium from Trader Joe's, but it didn't have an ID tag. Can anyone help me identify it? It's from Matsui Nursery, if it helps to know.

P.S. Can someone please help me figure out how to upload pictures without them getting rotated? This is driving me insane.

A beauty... good catch!

That's an Oncidium-group intergeneric (more than one genus in the mix) Impossible to determine exactly which one... various hybrids look similar. So it's one of the human-made genera (like Brasidium or Colmanara or... )Actually they have all been renamed so even harder to get it right even at the genus level. Fortunately all of the variations on the theme want the same care - kept more damp than a Phalenopsis (these should never dry out), and maybe a little brighter than a Phal.

As for the sideways photos, it's a "feature" of the ancient software that the Board uses. If you download the photo to your PC, open it in your "editor of choice", rotate 90 degrees, save, then rotate back and save again, it will likely be oriented correctly when you upload. But we're all used to turning head sideways...

Yeah I thought it was an intergeneric. I managed to find pictures online of similar orchids. Oncidium Gilded Tower 'Mystic Maze and Bnfd Gilded Tower 'Mystic Maze' are a couple of names I stumbled upon. They look very similar.

As for the care, I'm currently experimenting a bit with the potting. I usually put my oncidiums in bark+sphagnum or fully sphagnum in plastic pots. However, with this guy, I've repotted it in a terracotta pot with coco coir+peat moss+perlite. I'm hoping it will like it since the pot itself is porous and the media has sufficient aeration and humidity.

P.S. LMAO I figured something was wrong with the website itself. I tried changing the rotation in my editor, but it still was uploaded messed up

Matsui sells nice healthhy plants in good medium. They don't need repotting when purchased. Unfortunately they say on their Web site they won't provide names.

Unfortunately that's not my experience with their plants (at least what I get in Trader Joe's stores where I am). A number of their plants have had bacterial/fungal infections. I suspect one even had a viral one though I didn't bother getting it tested for obvious reasons.
Also, most of the time, the media is very foul smelling. I also hate how they just up-pot their plants while keeping the original plug which completely rots the roots. Vast majority of the root system in the plants I got has been rotten. Discoloration on the leaves is also very frequently seen.
I don't mind it very much since I only pay $18 for each orchid. Plus, I've managed to save a number of them in my ICU setup.
It is unfortunate they don't provide any ID tags for their plants though.

The grex you identified (Gilded Tower 'Mystic Maze') is correct. Due to taxonomic reclassifications, it has been known under several different names (genera).

Oncidium was never correct, as there is Brassia in the background. The current correct designation is Brascidostele Gilded Tower 'Mystic Maze'.

Thanks for helping me out. I figured "Oncidium" wouldn't be correct since this is an intergeneric.
Brascidostele Gilded Tower 'Mystic Maze' sounds right. I'll adopt that as its name .
