Default Can you confirm if anceps or gouldiana

I have grown this same plant (many times divided) for about 25 years and I’ve always labelled it as Laelia anceps. I’ve never really been able to distinguish L. anceps from L. gouldiana however. Can someone familiar with these plants please confirm if this is in fact anceps and not gouldiana or a hybrid.

Sorry the flower is a bit tatty, in its last few days of bloom.

Cheers
Arron

Hi there Arron. Good question! We might need to grab some close-up shots of the lip features of your flower, just to compare with close-up features of gouldiana.

OrchidBoard upload can go up to approximately 1024x768 pixels, or 768x1024 ------ depending whether the pic is landscape or portrait format.

There's so many variations in anceps, that I'm not even sure it's possible to visibly tell the difference between a gouldiana and an anceps. I'm thinking DNA test is one way to tell of observations can't pick it.

I think pure anceps - doesn't look like a hybrid. Definitely not L. gouldiana. Here are a couple of photos of mine. Left is L. anceps, right is L. gouldiana. L. gouldiana is a smaller flower, petals and lip have different shape, flower has an almost diamond-dusted texture. You can also check out my website for some other L. anceps, there is so much variation.

I just wonder whether this person here photographed an actual gouldiana, or whether he/she photographed an anceps.

yeah the wikipedia pages for orchids are a bit unreliable, I prefer to use IOSPE Photos for reference photos.

Afid, totally agree. IOSPE has research and references behind each photo. Wikipedia is only going to be as good as the knowledge level of its contributors and reviewers, a mixed bag.

True Afid. Rather disappointing about that person captioning that wikipedia photo with gouldiana, when it's actually not gouldiana at all. Or Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens got it wrong too hehehe
