The pH difference on the Vanda wasn't slight... it was a change from a pure-water formula to a "bloom booster" that was extremely acidic (like 4.5) in pure water, for an extended time. Quite interesting

The "Calanthe sylvatica" I purchased a while ago turned out to be a Calanthe triplicata. I suppose the seller got the tags mixed up, as the picture on the listing was of C. sylvatica. Unfortunately I only found out long after I bought it so I'm not sure what to do, but for now I'll forgive.

If you know it's a NOID, you just love it for its beauty (but probably didn't pay big bucks for it). If you paid significant money for something special and got vin ordinaire you would have reason to be not happy. Honest error is one thing... misrepresentation quite another.

One the plant in question in the thread. It was a purchase (from a garden center, like $15, not pennies but not a major investment) and what apparently happened is that my wife said she saw a tag on the floor and knew they were important and she put it in the closest plant. Then she realized there was a tag in that plant and she didn’t know which one was there and which one she put there. She guessed wrong apparently and it took 7 months for the truth to come out hahaha

I’ve had that happen a few times with Cattleyas. The frustrating thing is the that the flowers have been excellent!

see, that is another unforeseen annoyance, Bayard, when it is an awesome plant and you have no idea...

i usually just stick my tags down in the pot but i secure them with wire to my mounts....what do most of you do?

i assume the commercial growers use the "stick in the pot" bc it is much faster

First, I make my own tag (written in non-fading pencil) for every plant, though I keep the vendor tags too. Some vendor tags last well, others don't, I know the characteristics of my own tags under my conditions . Punch a hole and tie tags to mounts and baskets, stick in pots.

Another trick - especially useful for those with small children, is to put a second tag (written in pencil) in the bottom of the pot when repotting. Then when the little angels decide that collecting tags is fun, you have a backup.

Once ..... I've been done once only, which is surprisingly 'ok'. Disappointing when it happened though. Extremely disappointing.

I purchased four pots of supposed-to-be Rlc. Memoria Helen Brown 'Sweet Afton', from a reputable orchid nursery in Australia. It probably wasn't their fault. They probably got swindled by whoever supplied them. Most likely.

When one flowered - it was definitely not what the commercially printed tags said it is/was.

It is certainly not Rlc. Memoria Helen Brown 'Sweet Afton'.

At least it is from the Rlc. Mem. Helen Brown family. But that is beside the point.

So now, it will be interesting to see what flowers come from the other mature sized orchids. Will see what we get.

Not a huge deal now, because I ended up acquiring from somebody else the kind of orchid with the kind of flower that I had been searching for (actually equally nice as what I was searching for) - for all these years. So all ok.
