Default rhyncholaelia or brassavola???

I have a Brassavola Jimminey Cricket that Im taking to our society's show tomorrow morning. I know there have been some name changes as far as Brassavola Digbyana (one of the parent plants) was concerned. Im always hesitant to change tags at the whimsy of the botonists and taxonomists but should this hybrid now be considered Rhyncholaelia Jimminey Cricket? I tried to look it up on the Royal Horticulture Society's web page and got a dead end. The Santa Barbara Orchid Estate Still has both listed as Brassavola. Just need to know to fill out my entry tag. Thanks a ton

Or just brassavola... Fight the system! I'm boycotting most name changes these days, maybe I'm just getting old and crotchety.

yeah thats why I held out on changing it. trying to get some of these names down has been hard enough. I still feel dumb half the time. Not to mention keeping all the cultural requirements straight but now they are changing the names I do know and giving me bigger words that I can't pronounce Oh well. I wouldn't even bother if it wasn't for the show. Maybe I'll leave both tags in and tell them its multiple choice.

As hard as it is for me to admit, I have to agree with this particular change. I never thought B. nodosa and B. digbyana looked like they were that related. Here's one other change that will sure date anyone who remembers it. At one time ALL slipper orchids were called Cypripedium. Yup, paphs, phrags, and all their hybrids. Sometimes these guys do get it right. Just my 3 cents (inflation).

Now you have hit on one of my pet peeves. Today, a taxonimist has only one way of being published outside of crawling around in the wild and finding something new. They must change something, back to something found long ago, or discover an error, etc. Then they publish their findings. BUT,,, there is no peer group that reviews these studies or findings. NO one reviews the studies and says "OK go publish that we, the orchid world, will use it." No one is bound to use the findings. So, you may use the new ID if you want, but using the old one is still OK. (Seems eventually the latest names win out as the orchid world ages.) Some names need changing, some are merely for ego I think. Some I liked and used, some I ignored, but all being used now.
Story,
Dr. Guido Braem made a study of Equitant Oncidiums, recommended changing them back to Tolumnea which he found an old reference to in ancient orchid literature. He did find it and it is correct, but I said, "Guido, it is such an unattractive word Tolumnea, it's the sound you might hear when and elephant passes gas!" (Accent on the "lum") :>), He still published it.

This "changing" really screws up all the records and data publshed before that date. That's the reason current orchid books are better than having old ones, they will be using the correct (so far) names. Some names changed three times while I was busy making labels, (1960 to present) and may change again I guess.
