Cattleya Iwanagara Apple Blossom???
Default Cattleya Iwanagara Apple Blossom???

Hi All,

Im not good in identifying orchids if there are few very similar looking ones and Im not sure whether they are other similar looking orchids but this looks like Cattleya Iwanagara Apple Blossom?

It does have fragrant, it is bi-foliage with the spike coming out from between the 2 leaves.

Can anyone advice?

TQ

It has that look. But enough hybrids look similar that certainty is not possible... you could identify it as "like Iwanagaara Apple Blossom" or "similar to..." but without a tag, ultimately a NOID.

I agree, there are probably similar looking hybrids out there to give an ID with certainty. That does look like a possible Apple Blossom, but this this orchid also has a lot of natural variability in color, it's hard to tell. You call call it that for yourself, but it's always good practice to note on the label as well that it's maybe that name.

As to the name, correct or not, you would actually write it simply Iwanagara Apple Blossom, without Cattleya before it. Iwanagara is in the general family of Cattleya types, but is actually the name for complex hybrids with a background of Brassavola x Cattleya x Diacrium x Laelia.

Whatever it is, it’s a beauty.

Camille, puzzling over your response. Am I write in assuming that in the second paragraph the word ‘with’ should be ‘without’?

Good catch!! I fixed it. I had phrased it differently originally, but didn't reread well enough after editing.

Thank you Roberta, Camille, ArronOB and Papluvr for commenting. I will leave it as NOID then, or think of a name for it.

I know of nobody that can reliably identify hybrids from the flower. Even species can be a problem.

The ONLY time I am confident in identifying a no-tag plant in-bloom is if I know I had one in my collection and did not have another plant that looked like that...

Take a look at these photos from another thread. Three flowers of the exact same hybrid.

Those flowers - are incredibly nice - visually. Those are from the one single/individual plant, right?
