This is a supermarket rescue that I don’t know anything about. Looking at it I notice the lip is atypical for a phaelonopsis and presumably is derived from a related genera. Any idea roughly what might be in its parentage.

And yes, I know, a noid is a noid etc. Just curious where such a distinctive lip comes from.

Cheers
Arron

It looks a lot like "World Class" but with a NOID you can't be sure. At least it is close in appearance.

Big Foot' JC/AOS is where most of the big lip (tripetala) come from. Phals of this kind have that distinctive lip and come from this cross. It could be:

Dtps. World Class 'Bigfoot' JC/AOS

If it is World Class its parents are: (Phalaenopsis Mae Hitch X Phalaenopsis Kathy Sagaert)

These are lovely. I have a pink one like yours and a yellow one.

The lip is simply a genetic mutation called peloria, not the result of fancy intergeneric breeding. Peloria is a condition where the lip partially (or fully) takes on qualities of the petals, or more commonly for mass produced orchids, where the petals partially (or fully) take on qualities of the lip.

The actual parentage of your plant is almost certainly 100% Phalaenopsis, involving species such as P. amabilis, P. aphrodite, and P. schilleriana, as well as a hodgepodge of other species. But as you know, since it's a NOID complex hybrid, it would be difficult to say for sure.

Ok, that makes it very clear. Common mutation - not a trait inherited from an intergeneric ancestor.

Thanks
