Do my phals roots look ok? (PIC) Worried about plant health
Question Do my phals roots look ok? (PIC) Worried about plant health

Do my phals roots look ok to you? It's putting out flower stems, but I'm worried the roots are not healthy.

-Bought as flowering plant from grocery store packed in moss & pot without hole (mothers day 2018)
-Potted in bark mix and pot with drainage a month or two ago
-Sits in eastern window
- Watered ~weekly by spraying with lukewarm water via the spray nozzle on kitchen sink. Allowed to drain completely.
-Roots are grey (see photo)

It has 4 flower stalks right now (two new, two off old stalk), so I want to make sure it's doing well, or adjust accordingly.

The roots I see look good, what I can see of the overall plant also looks good. The pot size is a good size for that plant and the root mass I see.

There is some slight root wrinkling, and the lower leaves are a bit dehydrated, you may want to water a little more thoroughly (for example, if you water three times a week by flushing water through the pot, change to make one of the 3 waterings a soak of just the root zone, maybe for 15 minutes then drain).

If you have not had the plant for very long, you may want to let the plant adjust to your conditions first before making any changes.

I think that you could safely increase the watering to twice a week - the bark is coarse and will drain well. It may be a little bit dehydrated, though in general looks like it is doing quite well.

Welcome to the Orchid Board, venymae! That looks like a very healthy Phalaenopsis.

The visible roots on top are quite silvery in color, which is generally an indication that the plant is ready to be watered, but depending on how good the drainage of the pot is, it's possible the roots in the bottom could still be damp. It's perfectly normal that the roots exposed to the air will dry and turn silver much more quickly than those down in the pot.

So it can be a bit tricky to figure out that happy medium between keeping the top roots hydrated while still allowing the bottom roots to dry a bit between waterings. But you'll learn as time goes by. Take note of the weight of the pot, too, and how it changes from right after you've watered it. That's a helpful indicator.

You have it potted in coarse bark, which is fine, but that's a medium that will dry out pretty fast. Also, if that's an unglazed clay pot, it will dry out faster than a plastic or ceramic pot. I agree that it could safely be watered a bit more often.

Looks good to me. Aerial roots will always look silvery.
