It is just a short question... are variegated phals rare or uncommon, or the complete opposite?
I saw some miniature variegated phals with a fairly fair price. So are they rare or common?

I have one (Sogo Vivian) and I know among the OB members, they are not uncommon. In general commerce, they are not often seen. But, rare, no.

It is rare in that acorss the entire spectrum of Phals,y you don't see it often and it's hard to breed into a hybrid. But, as Dolly noted, Sogo Vivian is a common one. I even see it in supermarkets here on occasion.

So in the case of a minature variegated phal I would assume it to be Sogo Vivian or related to it, and would not pay a high price for it.

Variegated phals tend to be more costly. As others have noted, they are uncommon but not necessarily "rare".

I know there are a few Phal species with mottled leaves, but I suspect that this is hard to reproduce in hybrids, as Camille said. I recently viewed* a post here about someone's Phal Wiganiae which is a primary hybrid of schilleriana and stuartiana (both mottled) - very pretty, I added it right to my wishlist

*I can't remember the post itself was recent or not!

Variegated and mottled are two different things, but yes, both are not too common. Mottled leaves are a natural trait found in only a few Phal species. Variegation is a due to a mutation in this case, if I'm not mistaken.

The Phal Wiganiae is probably mine. I posted photos of it yesterday (and a couple other times over the years). Rather impossible to find in the US, it's not a popular cross.

Thanks for the clarification Camille! I wasn't sure what the OP meant by variegated since I didn't know the term wasn't also used for mottled leaves. Too bad about the Phal. Wiganiae being hard to find, yours is so beautiful! I'll have to keep an eye out and snap it up if I ever find it.
