Can i "restart" a paphiopedilum?
Default Can i "restart" a paphiopedilum?

I have a very pretty paph that has a weak sectio of stem (from a period of insufficient light). Above that section the plant has what looks like root buds.

1. Can I Cut the plant below the root buds and repot? If so, what are the odds of the plant sending out new roots?
2. If I cut the plant, will the original roots regrow a new plant?

Thanks for the advice!

Marcia

If you can stimulate those root nubs to grow, the upper part should do nicely. While the remaining, lower part should have meristematic tissue that might branch and form a new plant, that's a bit hit or miss.

It really looks like it would. Insufficient light would start node elongation. If you could "layer" or air layer it, it might make generating roots less traumatic on the plant, in other words, Put some kind of a cup of paph potting mix at that higher level (or "tie" it on) and allow it to grow roots into the new higher pot for a year or so and then cut it off.

I have a Paph growing like this. A while back I asked here, and people suggested I move it to more light. I put it where it gets 3-4 hours of morning sun through a window, and it continues growing like this. I think we have Paph vines. I'm hoping it twines, or sprouts tendrils, so I don't need to tie it to the trellis.

Default Thank you for the replies!

Thank you for the encouragement. I will try the regrowth after the bloom is finished.
