Two basal keikis after crown rot? Female
Default Two basal keikis after crown rot?

I broke off the top crown leaf one day several months ago while repotting this plant. I've been abusing it ever since (lack of water, etc.) in the hopes it would continue to grow in the form of a basal keiki. I don't have keiki paste, so in researching, and from the experts here, I learned that coconut water has auxins and cytokinins. So I tried to help the plant stimulate growth by applying a non-scientific homemade paste of coconut water, coconut milk (I don't have lanolin either), and seaweed fertilizer to the crown and base of the plant. (Not sure that this actually helped. I'm prone to give all the credit to the plant.)

It has popped out several new fat, healthy roots and these two new growths. One from the crown, which looks like a leaf! Based on what I've read, I thought it would never grow from there again. Have you seen this before?

Sheesh! Only in the orchid world do you abuse something and get rewarded with more growth. These plants are amazing!

Two basal keikis after crown rot? Male
Default

You probably pulled out only the top leaf, which broke far down near the base. The meristem remained to form more leaves. Sometimes when people pull on the top leaf the whole top of the stem comes off, including the meristem. Then it can only grow from a meristem lower down on the stem.

Alternatively, you pulled out the apical meristem, but one just below that was still viable, and so close to the original stem apex that it looks like it's continuing to grow vertically.
