Phals blooming in "vanda" baskets with LECA Male
Default Phals blooming in "vanda" baskets with LECA

These two phals are in clay pellets (LECA) inside teak "vanda" baskets. I line them with coconut fiber so the pellets stay in the basket, then put NZ moss just on the top to retain more moisture. Basically wanted to try something where it would be almost impossible to overwater

Also, the medium doesn't need to be changed as it doesn't degrade over time like bark.

They are both gorgeous. I grow my phals in LECA and plastic basket pots. Same idea.

Curious how often you water them--looks like they're growing indoors?

Beth, I water about every other day in winter and daily in summer. I use a sprayer which applies the water more evenly over the LECA. If I soaked them in a bucket to water, I suppose they could go three+ days between waterings. I'm in snowy Montana so they don't go outside to play very often!
