my oldest phal started sending this up a few weeks back,i'm hoping its a flower spike it would be the 1st time on a new spike the last 2 were off the same spike

Are you talking about on the left just above that lower leaf going sideways? That's a flower spike.

lol,in south africa you never know.put the spike in to train it upwards,whatever it was.

opened this morning,flowers seem a bit smaller than last time,wonder if its got anything to do with the coarser bark i used to repot it?
