I wouldn't call that peloric.....Every flower of the 3 that I can see has a different extra part. Peloric flowers basically have petals that are similar to the lip. I'm not sure what I would call what this blooming is other than an aberration. It will be interesting to see if it blooms normally next time.

I agree. If it were truly peloric all the petals would resemble the lip, and it would always bloom that way. This one just looks mutated, and may not bloom that way next year.

I have read that some peloric phals have gone back to budding normal flowers.
Does peloric normalcy depend on the condition existing so many generations previous to the current plant?

Phantasm 09-19-2007 12:23 PM

I'm not sure that I understand the question, but some mutations are stable and others are not. A plant like this one could easily bloom normally next year or it could continue to be a mess. Stable pelorics always bloom without reverting back to a non peloric bloom. Many are line bred specifically for splash petals.

Some pelorics are created with mutations in the mericloning process and seem to be stable. Most pelorics are from known breeding plants such as C. intermedia aquinii which has created most of the splash petal cattleyas.
