Default Does anyone mist their phalaenopsis?

I've always read and heard that you shouldn't get water on the leaves of phalaenopsis. But I've been misting my phals every morning since last spring and they seem to be doing very well. Mine are grown outdoors in Florida so they dry within an hour usually. Am I risking crown rot? Does anyone else mist their phals?

I think they key here is misting in the morning. I mist the roots but tend to avoid the leaves because my damper climate means they don't dry fast, but if they have plenty of time to dry by evening then I don't think there is a problem and in dry climates it could help.

I mist my phals rather frequently. Especially if one has a root problem when I bring it home. I make sure the mist droplets are very fine and don't spray it directly at leaf and crown but aim it a bit high so it gently falls on them. It is never enough to start rolling into crowns and I have never had a problem.

I drench the few I have once a day in the dry season. Usually early when I feed my birds.
They, however, are mounted to trees not in pots.

I believe Rosie is onto something with her comments. Temp, humidity and time of drying is important.

Remember always where your plants grow naturally...they get wet leaves! But they also grow where it's breezy and warm. So I think you should do what works for you.

I most my phals but only my warm growers and only the warm growers that are in my French cloche or glass box. The box warms up nicely in the morning with the sun and is kept warm throughout the day with a heating may under it. I mist it every day and they dry out in an hour as well. I use the cloche because of my exceedingly dry climate. My warm growers are quite happy with the more gradual changes of temp and humidity throughout the day.

As for my standard phals, nope....no misting, just weekly watering in sh.

I don't "mist" mine but at every watering I take them to the sink and use the sprayer everywhere, leaves, air roots, media, crown. I DO tip them so as to leave no puddle in the crown but what's there will drain away downward anyhow. I used to have fungal problems and a couple crown rots because I would come home after work and even if it was late I would water them. No more ever since I installed a ceiling fan and leave it on 24/7 !!!! Haven't had ANY fungal or crown rot since and that's been 5 years !!! I leave the fan on full blast pulling air upward to the ceiling and it moves it down the walls and all my plants gently sway in the breeze created.

I mist the roots at the surface of the pot to keep them hydrated until the next watering. I don't think misting the leaves doesn't much in the way of raising humidity. Seeing as the humidity in the room is naturally always above 60%, I see misting as a total waste of my time, and time isn't something that I have a lot to spare of. I'd rather admire my orchids!

I mist the leaves and the roots in the afternoon...but they all dry in an hour in this winter dryness and heater situation...I also have an occilating small fan on each side of the table I have an orchid by the windowsill...I soak the pot for 5 min with seaweed once a week and that also waters the phals weekly

I don't mist anything. I agree with Camille that misting is a fleeting attempt to raise humidity, and really doesn't do much. None of my plants seem to care.

I mist all of my phals on their surface roots and leaves (mostly underside but some land on the top side as well) every morning and evening. When I'm home all day, I mist throughout the day.
They grow really well. I make sure that there is no water collected in the center (crown?) in fear of rotting. Phals leaf seems very thick and glossy and water on it doesn't seem to harm them at all.

I also mist my catts, but I never ever mist my oncidiums on thier leaves after learning the hard way that doing so encourages the development of annoying little spots on the leaves, which I really really hate to see.

Oh, by the way, I grow my orchids in the apartment all year around.
