Swamp stick is this: SwampStick Ceramic Orchid Mount - Home Basically it's a ceramic tube (I think it has to be made of a certain type of ceramic) that you fill with water, and the water wicks through to the outside, keeping the roots of the orchids on it moist.

Your rocks do the same thing, except that they draw the water up from the saucer.

Love your weed growers 'meeting', that must have been hilarious to hear!! Betcha that S/H would work wonderfully with the plants. You know what? I think I might give it a try. I was planning on growing some from seed this spring (I love the smell and look of it!). Here in NL people are legally allowed to keep up to 8 plants for personal use.

I wonder if anyone has tried this with a bulbophyllum? Seems like that might be a good match.

the saucer is a nice idea to keep the rock moist. i have a scilleriana and a bastianii mounted in a lava rock with green moss. so far roots are growing but the saucer thing is a good thing to try. i'll post pictures soon.

I like the moss idea. We have lots of varieties here that are vivid green all winter. I have just bought a masdevallia, and I'm thinking that the evaporation would help keep it cool in the summer, but I don't know if I have the nerve to try it yet. Maybe if I take a little piece of it when I repot it.
