Do they like their roots pack tight or loose. I've tried both and loose roots seem to outgrow tight roots.
when i go from tight to loose they tend to take a long time to show leaf growth. What works well for you?

phals like loose roots, i just place theclean healthy roots in the pot and shake the media in around em...till it is holding the plant firmly....shaken not stirred, lol.....catts on the other hand need potting with a jack hammer....

I've had (much) better results with my Phals in loosely potted medium. They need that room to grow and also need more than just a wetting when watered. Sponge rock in the mix, will take care of this whether it's potted in bark mix or sphagnum. The whole idea is to keep them very moist with lot's of air circulating through the pots. Lots of breathing room and moisture is the ideal combination.
