Default Phal or Dtps Caribbean Sunset X I Hsin Sun

Hi Everybody,

I'm new to the joy of Phalaenopsis and i recently won on ebay an auction for, what is labelled as, Phal Caribbean Sun X I Hsin Sun - i did some searching for information on this cross and most of the information is saying it's not a straight Phal but rather a Dtps. Can anyone shed any light on this for me? It looks like a typical Phal flower. Attached are some pictures...

Kind regards

Hi OzPahl and welcome to Orchid Board

Dtps seems to often be labled as Phal. I bought one the other day which was labled Dtps on the website I ordered from, but the plant label when it arrived said Phal. When I search on the web the same plant seems to be listed under both names depending where you look.

From my limited experience yours actually has more of the Doritas shape visible in the lip then mine, mine looks just like a Phal.

I saw a comment from another OB user the other day which indicated that Doritas plants have now been recatorgarised as Phals. That being the case it would make the Doritanopsis hybrids also get recatorgarised as Phal.

It really would not suprise me if that's where the confusion stems from. Orchids seem to keep getting moved between various genus all the time. Sometimes you can see the sence behind it, other times not.

I've kept my Dtps labled as that, although I will treat it just like my Phals.

I've checked in OrchidWiz and I can find Phal. Caribbean Sun, but not Phal. (or Dtps) I-Hsin Sun. There is a Phal. I-Hsin Sunflower, which is a lovely yellow.

As Rosie says many of the Dtps. have been reclassified as Phals.

At one time, Phalaenopsis and Doritis were considered as separate genera. Thus, when they were hybridized the name given was Doritanopsis, or Dtps. Doritis was re-assigned to the Phalaenopsis genus, though; the labeling is kind of confusing because a lot of hybrids were registered when the two were still considered as separate.

Just call everything Phal., but when searching on ebay or looking up plant names, include a Dtps. version just in case someone is still using the old system.

P.S. I'm guessing that plant should be Phal. Caribbean Sun x I-Hsin Sunflower, there's no "I-Hsin Sun" and the shape and spike habit of that cross looks like I-Hsin Sunflower.
