Thanks for your reply. I kind of rescued this plant and it is much healthier than it was a month or two ago. Its former primary caregiver (ssssssshhhhhhhhhhh my wife) didn't water it for some time and I noticed it likely just before certain dearh. The smallest leaf was shrivelled up badly and looked like it would fall off and the others beginning to look the same. It is doing quite well now, look better by the week. The root system under the plant in the pot is quite healthy now, there is a number of large new roots.

Thanks for your answer

Sandy

I think you've done well Sandy!

I would also give it more light, that dark green colour usually indicates not enough light..

Its a lot lighter than it was, it is getting a lot of light now. It sits on a table between 2 windows that are close together and gets several hours of direct afternoon light now. The room is a bright roon with a lot of windows .

Here is a photo of the new roots

Phals do NOT have two growth points like yours shows. They are mono-something (can't rememeber the last bit) and only ever have one growth point.

Phals can't be split in the same way as many other 'chids for that simple reason.

I am certain that is TWO phals in that pot, not one! Great news... you have two plants

I have seen them sold that way. A local store recently had 'two spike orchids' on sale and while a Phal CAN have two flower spikes, these had two single spike plants in the pot.

To seperate these two plants may not be a simple matter though. If their roots have grown intertwined with each other it may difficult to seperate them without root damage.

Personally when repotting I would gently try and seperate the roots of the two plants, if that can be done without damange then you can put them in to two pots. If they are very intertwined I would probably give up and put them back in the same pot.

Rosie, the word is monopodial. Phals, Vandas and other monopodial orchids will sometimes branch off. this is usually, but not always the result of the top of the plant being destroyed or removed. (and removing the top of the plant does not guarantee that it will branch off).
