Phalaenopsis schilleriana dying roots
Default Phalaenopsis schilleriana dying roots

Hello everybody,

I have a Phal schilleriana which is about to bloom (20+ flower buds) and I'm quite worried because new root tips suddenly started to rot. No idea what could cause this. I have 20 Phals (most of them hybrids, but also 3 other natural species) and all behave perfect. I treat all the same, now in winter 1x per week water (immersion) with weak fertilizer. All are very happy but this one. What could be going on?

Any suggestions?

Many thanks!

I bought this plant in summer and transplanted it from sphagnum into bark chips in August... Even though it is going to flower I don't know if the change was too harsh.

Do you think it is better to just leave the plant as it is or would you intervene?

Thanks

Could the root tips have been bruised during the repot? If it doesn’t look like it’s spreading beyond the root tips and the plant isn’t having trouble staying hydrated, I’d just give it some time. Some of my Phalaenopsis have had a bit of an adjustment period going from moss to bark.

Thank you Alice,
the root tips started to grow just after the repotting, but started to dye some weeks ago. Now there are no fresh growing roots, at least in the visible part of the pot.

If your concerns came from what you see in the photo, I wouldn't worry about it. Most of what's happening inside the pot is not visible.
It would be helpful to see a photo of the whole plant 'cause that's where the main signals for trouble appear.

Hi Rbarata. The plant has 4 leaves, the 2 lower look a bit dehydrated, but the two bigger ones are OK. It has a big spike with some 20 buds.

Just in case you haven't noticed, in my previous post where "...I wrote I would worry about it." I meant "...I wouldn't worry about it."

Symptoms that something is wrong at the root system is, for ex, when new leaves start to get limp and look dehydrated. The one you show in the photo seems ok and it's perfectly normal that older leaves start to fade away.
It seems your plant has only two leaves...am I right?

Hehe I ws not sure about your message, thanks for clarifying. Well it has 4 leaves, just a weird photo with perfect perspective to hide the lower ones.
I will just wait and see. I really love this plant, hope it recovers!
Thanks!
