what green lights do I use if I want a reading area near to orchids? Just a regular cfl type bulb, standard socket.

If you want green lights so that the plants remain in the dark, I wouldn't bother with it. Keeping a normal light on until late in the evening/night is not going to affect the plants. Especially not a reading light presumably at least several feet away, which is almost equivalent to darkness anyway for plants.

If you have light sensitive (some blooms only are fragrant at night and in complete darkness) it's best to simply move those to another room.

interesting... thanks! I have been throwing a towel over the lampshade so that only a small sliver of light is exposed for reading.

What about getting an LED light on an elastic headband? You can point it at the book.

And you could read on a tablet or laptop.

I agree with Camille that a lamp, especially with a shade, is not going to spill enough light on the plants to affect it.

And by the way, if the light intensity was enough to affect it, switching to a green bulb isn't going to help much, as plants do use the green part of the spectrum.

Lamp light should not be enough to affect the plants, especially incandescent bulbs. Remember, plants get moon light which is reflected sunlight in nature.
