New CF Light to consider
I just had to do this - made total sense! I updated a 55 watt CF (coily tube bulb) full-spectrum to a 105 watt CF full spectrum rather than go to a second bulb (just re-positioned the bulb). Here's the setup  it's the bulb in the front. The two nearest the windows are still 55 watt bulbs. I measured over 600 foot-candles near the screen where the plants set. That's more than a doubling of light. Here's the source for the bulbs (pretty cheap for what they are) 105 Watt Compact Fluorescent I purchased the "full-spectrum bulbs, as they are best for plants.

I don't do most Dendros or large, "floofy orchids". For me it's minis (like Angraecoides), Masdies, Paphs, and others that crept in somewhere along the line. See my orchid list for complete collection (usually not current.)

Here's what I did with them. I replaced a 400 watt MH with this setup 1 1/2 more FC's and only 210 watts. Jim.

What I used for a reflector was a plastic container that I bought from Ikea. I paid about $12.00. I drilled holes in it to let the heat escape. It can be hung by chain on any angle to reflect the light. The size of the container is about 12" deep, and about 28" long by 20". Hope this helps. Jim.

Do they give off as much heat as a 430 watt hps set up? My bulb is getting old and I may consider your setup. I already have a reflector so it may not be very difficult to adapt it to CF. What wattage would you suggest? |

The CFL's give a lot less heat then the 430W. I would try 105W. If your housing is for a standard bulb your ok, if it's a large socket"MOGUL" you'll need an adaptor. GOOD LUCK. Jim.

Would I need 1 or 2 bulbs to get equal to, or more, to my 430 hps?
I will need to put different holes in my reflector because the whole hps light unit is one piece. If I only need one, I could use the existing hole where my bulb goes through.

The 105 watt unit I linked to says 6900 lumes or equiv to 420 watt bulb. Lamp life approx 8,000 hours. I plan to replace annually (approx 5-6,000 hours). The base is "medium" which is same as standard incandescent bulb like next to a sofa.
