Is this a good MH Hid light for orchids? It is a Plantmax MH 600 W Conversion bulb - a spectrum graph of the bulb's output shows peaks in the blue (450nm), green (550nm) and orange/red(590nm). It's a Plantmax conversion bulb that can fit in an HPS ballast with a 7200K temp. I'm also looking at a dimmable ballast that can be set to 600/400/320/250 watts with the same 600W bulb. I'm no expert at reading those spectrum charts, but it seems like it would be a good choice for me. I live in a condo with very low natural light levels, and I'd like to try growing more than phals and paphs.

It should be good. The color temperature may be a little high for my taste as I find 5000-6000K to be very "white" and too have a nice color balance. The 7200K may have a to blue or harsh look for my taste.

Try to find the color rendering index (CRI) or the general color rendering index (Ra) for the bulb as it tells alot of the color cast the light have. Or simplier how true colors are seen under illumination by the light.

The argument for blue ligh for veg growth abd red for flowering... This is nothing of importance for MOST hobby growers as we usually have more to gain by looking over other growing parameters as long as we can get a strong balanced (broad spectra) light!
