Default New LED Lamp

I have long been intrigued by the potential of LED lighting for plants. The first ones were combinations of red and blue LEDs, but while the plants may have grown well under them (search for Rob's comments), the appearance of the plants and flowers under them was like something from outer space! Newer technology has brought us white light, making them far more acceptable for use in the home.

I have just gotten in some 13W bulbs containing 64 LEDs having a color temperature in the range of 5700-6400°K, like a bright day outdoors. They screw into a standard "Edison" (incandescent bulb) fixture, and are 7.75" in total length, including the base. The light emitting array is 5.125" x 1.125", and is protected by a clear plastic lens to prevent issues with misting or splashing of water. The base has some rotational ability, so there is room for adjustment once it is screwed into the socket.

I only have a limited number for testing, so if you'd like to join in, please check out our retail store.

AND... if you use the coupon code "LED" at checkout, I'll knock $10 off of the price.

Yes, those are great. Everybody I show them to buys them. Just sold two today to somebody who came over for something else! *grin*

They are the best thing going for terrariums right now, and your plants will love them.

Someone talked me out of my light meter, but an iPhone photo meter app tells me 250 fc about a foot away, which a 10% or so higher than I get from a 2-foot T5 bulb with no reflector.

Sorry little off topic, but what is the app called you're using Ray?

Interesting! I might give it a try...

Ray, what are your impressions, so far?

"So far" is only a few days, so my impressions are limited.

Very bright. I am experimenting with an African violet my wife has in an otherwise pretty dark bathroom that only has a NE-facing window - and it's not in the window. It lights up the whole room.

The aluminum housing/heat sink gets pretty warm, but not "burn yourself" warm. I'm thinking about retrofitting a terrarium currently utilizing T5 lamps, and they keep the temperature about 85º-90ºF. These should be a bit cooler.

FYI - it seems that up to three of these fit nicely into a small USPS Flat-Rate box, so shipping is only $5.15 anywhere in the US, $12.95 to Canada.

Thanks Ray, I just ordered 3 of them. I've been looking for these for months! Now the waiting game begins, but I should have them before I need them.

Interesting. I've been waiting for a compact option of LED lights that doesn't make my plants look like aliens. These aren't even that expensive. Definitely going to try some.
